Ghost-Jason Reynolds
Riley and I absolutely LOVED Ghost, by Jason Reynolds, who is one of my favorite YA authors. This novel tells the story of runner, Castle Cranshaw, nicknamed Ghost, who faces much more than competition on the high school track. This novel is the first in a series about young adults on the team and my students fly through all the titles. I book talk this book by reading the back cover and first chapter, and the novel flies off my shelf! Try it out in your room and tell me your experience! #realisticfiction #awardwinner #urban #seriesBuy the full series here!
Maturity: 2/4This novel is appropriate for most middle school and high school students. I rated it a two because the first chapter gives background information on why Castle's life is complicated--his father was imprisoned after trying to shoot him and his mother. In Castle's description of his father, it is clear that abuse was a pattern in the household, but is not explicitly described. Despite the intensity of the first chapter, the novel does not contain explicit content.

Lexile is a score that helps educators and parents match students with an appropriate text. A Lexile score is a measure of both a child's reading ability and a text difficulty. However, Lexile does not take into account the content of a novel. So, pairing readers with a text is a complex process, and knowledge of a novel's themes and plot is necessary to make a high-quality recommendation. If you are curious about the grade-level equivalent to Lexile scores, check out the conversion chart here!Check us out on Instagram! #rileyreadsya
