Roll With It ~ Jamie Sumner

If you are looking to add a feel-good, heart-warming, and inspirational title to your shelf, THIS is it. During a pretty stressful time in my life, this book was the best cure.

Ellie Cowan has CP (Cerebral Palsy) and is confined to her wheelchair. Though to outsiders, Ellie is defined by her chair and disability, anyone who knows Ellie understands that she is much, much more. She is a baker extraordinaire, mini golf pro, and tough as nails. Unfortunately, almost no one gets to see that side of Ellie because they never bother to ask. Even Ellie’s own father is uninterested in her and would rather spend his time with his new family (that he started after Ellie’s diagnosis).

Despite this, Ellie’s life is ok. She keeps busy with her hobbies, and her mom is her best friend. But when Ellie’s grandfather starts getting more and more forgetful, Ellie’s mom decides they should leave their life in Nashville behind and move into Mema and Grandpa’s trailer in Oklahoma.

Being with her grandparents was a dream come true, and moving into a tiny trailer with no handicap bathroom had never felt so good, even if it meant being one of the “trailer kids” at school. But will one incident rip it all away?

Lexile is a score that helps educators and parents match students with an appropriate text. A Lexile score is a measure of both a child’s reading ability and a text difficulty. However, Lexile does not take into account the content of a novel. So, pairing readers with a text is a complex process, and knowledge of a novel’s themes and plot is necessary to make a high-quality recommendation.
