Everything, Everything ~ Nicola Yoon
Though Maddie has been confined indoors for nearly her entire life--spending all her time with her nurse, Carla, or her mother--she hasn’t really minded. That is, not until a new family moves into the house next door and the son, in particular, catches her eye. Their communication begins as just stolen glances through their bedroom windows, but when Olly and Maddie start talking online, and then have the opportunity to meet in person, Maddie’s not sure what’s more important: feeling alive or staying alive. Combining elements of romance and mystery, students will not able to put this novel down.
Maturity: 3/4
I have many seventh grade students read this novel, but there is a scene where Maddie and Olly have sex. The scene takes place on 223-225. I suggest reading these pages before recommending the novel to your class or student.
Pages: 306
Lexile: HL610L
HL stands for “high level,” meaning that this novel’s content is more mature than the reading level indicates.
Lexile is a score that helps educators and parents match students with an appropriate text. A Lexile score is a measure of both a child’s reading ability and a text difficulty. However, Lexile does not take into account the content of a novel. So, pairing readers with a text is a complex process, and knowledge of a novel’s themes and plot is necessary to make a high-quality recommendation.
