Can you tell how much Riley loves this book? The Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora is a beautiful and sweet story by Pablo Cartaya that describes eighth grader Arturo’s mission to preserve his family’s restaurant when a big developer comes to Miami and threatens to take it down. Even more wonderful than the compelling plot of this novel is the way Cartaya weaves the Spanish and English language together and uses vivid description to present a strong image of Arturo’s Cuban-American culture and family. Students in fifth grade and up will enjoy this novel because it mixes a bit of romance with humor, and readers will feel passionate alongside Arturo to preserve his family business and the culture of his community.

However, Lexile does not take into account the content of a novel. So, pairing readers with a text is a complex process, and knowledge of a novel’s themes and plot is necessary to make a high-quality recommendation. If you are curious about the grade-level equivalent to Lexile scores, check out the conversion chart here!
