Out of My Mind ~ Sharon Draper
Out of My Mind, by Sharon Draper, is an incredible YA novel about a girl with cerebral palsy who is brilliant but trapped by her disability because she cannot speak or write. She struggles to demonstrate her abilities to her teachers, classmates, and even doctors; and once her intellect is known, she is forced to learn, through some very heart-wrenching experiences, that being different isn’t easy.
Over and over I see students laugh and cry with the characters in this novel, and readers ultimately learn that the encouragement and support of a few close family members and friends matters far more than the opinions of our acquaintances. Out of My Mind is a must-read.

Lexile is a score that helps educators and parents match students with an appropriate text. A Lexile score is a measure of both a child's reading ability and a text difficulty. However, Lexile does not take into account the content of a novel. So, pairing readers with a text is a complex process, and knowledge of a novel's themes and plot is necessary to make a high-quality recommendation. If you are curious about the grade-level equivalent to Lexile scores, check out the conversion chart here!Check us out on Instagram! #rileyreadsya
